The concept for “The Usual Suspects” came just from the shape of the canvas. I was so intrigued by this 36×12 canvas in the art store that I just had to have it. I wasn’t sure what I was going to paint on it at the time but I was sure that it had to be something unique and fun. And it had to be something that complimented a long, narrow, panoramic view.
I sat on it for a couple of months until the idea hit me to paint blue birds on a wire. I used 3 different reference photos to paint the birds while still making this a seamless painting. I also love the “distressed” look of the background. First, I painted the entire background gray and then went over the top with a palette knife with a light coating of the light blue paint so that pops of the gray showed through. Then, I then made random streaks of white to give an abstract cloud look. The end result is a piece of which I’m quite proud!
